The Italian Coast Guard says around 2,750 boat migrants have been rescued from the sea in the past few days, as this year’s arrivals have already outpaced that of last year.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been almost 11,000 sea arrivals, a 3rd higher than the same period last year.

To stop the flow, Italy and the European Union earlier this month pledged, to fund migrant camps in Libya run by the UN-backed government, and to supply equipment and training for the fight against people smugglers, but humanitarian groups are skeptical of the deal, saying Libya is not safe.
