The former shadow cabinet member claimed Theresa May had betrayed the European Union divorce in order to increase her majority in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister has insisted she will offer the “strong and stable” leadership to see the country through its negotiations with Brussels, while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said “Brexit is settled” when launching his party’s campaign on Tuesday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World at One, Ms Champion pleaded with listeners to focus on other issues rather than Britain’s decision to quit the EU.

Discussing Mrs May’s pledge, she said: “I find that very odd because what I wanted to see in a government now is fighting for the best deal.
