The Nigerian Senate has set up an Adhoc Committee to investigate the alleged diversion of funds by the Presidential Committee on the North East, PINE.
The Senate investigation is as a result of a motion by Senator Baba Garbai representing Borno Central on the alleged corruption in procurement processes meant to alleviate the suffering of internally displaced persons, IDPs.
The adhoc committee chaired by Senator Shehu Sani is to hold a public hearing to find out how funds committed to ameliorating the plight of the IDPs were spent by the government amidst corruption allegations.
Senators say the investigation is meant to give hope to the IDPs and the international community that the country is ready to do something to stop the diversion of aid and misapplication of appropriated funds meant for the upkeep of displaced persons.
The lawmakers also resolved to donate 32.7million Naira to be contributed by the 109 Senators in support of the welfare of the IDPs.
