An ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives is to investigate government’s approach for the repatriation and reparation of historical artifacts carted away from Nigeria.
A motion to that effect was sponsored by Representative Isiaka Ibrahim from Ogun state.
He recalls that Nigeria’s heritage stolen by European countries are yet to be returned in spite of several treaties supporting their return.
Other legislators frown at the continued holding of the artifacts and call on the Nigerian government to show more commitment in retrieving the stolen heritage.
Such historical monuments include the Nok Terra-cotta, Ife terra-cotta and bronzes, Benin bronzes among many others.
The lawmakers believe the artifacts are a good source torurist attraction and revenue generation if retrieved
