ARE WE REALLY WINNING THE ANTI-CORRUPTION WAR?

Coming into office with a strong policy direction of relieving the Country from the shackles of corruption which has bedeviled the country since God knows when, President Muhammadu Buhari with his zero-tolerance for corruption kick-start his anti-corruption crusade by removing the then EFCC Boss Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde replacing him with Mr. Ibrahim Magu (whose integrity has been put to test recently by the Senates Show-confirmation). Putting the Nigeria situation into play, you will discover that there is a scenario that if you try to fight corruption, corruption in turn will fight you back because everybody has been either involved in one corrupt practice or the other in the past call it minor or major corruption.
Asking the question; are we winning this war against corruption or losing it, you will discover that you will not find a clear cut YES or NO answer to it because just mere allegations and litigations in the Court of Law will not send a corrupt person to jail especially now that the Judiciary itself is termed to be corrupt as posited by the President himself when He said “the major obstacles to the anti-corruption war could be the Judiciary”.
How can we say that we are winning the fight against corruption when closing up to two 2 years now, they have not been any high profiled corruption case been prosecuted and subsequently convicted. The best we have seen so far can best be describe as; arrest and persecution coupled with fighting corruption in the Media and by the security agencies instead of the court Chambers.
Taking a leave from the case of Col. Sambo Dasuki, the former NSA under the Jonathan’s administration who embezzled over $2.1 Billion US dollars security Budget meant to acquire arms and ammunitions for the Military to fight the
War against Boko Haram, alongside his allies and syndicates is still lingering in Court and not making any positive headway. You should remember that the crime of Sambo Dasuki has been considered as a crime against Humanity especially at a time when the dreaded Boko Haram sect were killing, abducting and committing some heinous atrocities against innocent Nigerians.
For President Buhari to be successful in the war against corruption, it has to be decisive, timely and comprehensive. In short, a state of emergency has to be declared against corruption and corrupt people in the society as this endemic of Corruption has caused a lot of harm and National disgrace to our dear country owing to the fact that the latest ranking by Transparency International (T.I) ranked Nigeria as the 15th most corrupt Nation on the face of the Earth.
Lest for me, I will say that we are not near winning the war against corruption because day-in-day-out cases which have a corruption undertone takes place on the street of Nigeria call it Minor or Major corruption. How are we going to wipe out corruption in Nigeria were the anti-corruption war only amount to a political propaganda, selective and left to die down in the Court of Law.
Taking a peep into the recent crack on some high Judges of the federation by officers of the Department of States Security (DSS) where a large sum of raw cash were discovered in some of their residents is still fresh in the minds of Nigerians. Permit me not to make mention of any of the Justices that were quizzed because the essence of their arrest has long been defeated as it later metamorphosed into a political warfare among Nigerians especially between the Nigerians Bars Association(NBA) and the federal government as some people termed it as an invasion of the judicial Arm of Government. The last we can hear of them was their suspension from the Bench and being bailed on self recognition from the custody of the DSS. This kind of people (the arrested Judges) has to be prosecuted using a Cow-boy approach because they sleep with Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in their Pocket so nothing is new to them about the Law and not granting them bail on self recognition despite knowing the gravity of the offence they have committed.
As far as am concern, I stand with the President Muhammadu Buhari when He says that the Judiciary is his only obstacle to the realization of his fight against corruption.
Knowing well that all the machineries including the Anti-graft Agencies, the Secret Intelligence Service, and the Police are ready to prosecute this fight to a standstill, then the fight has to be taken to the Court Chambers because it is no longer news that the Judiciary is seriously hampering this noble course of ours using their instruments of adjournment, unwarranted bail and other devious tactics to frustrate and make the lives of Nigerians more miserable.
After all said and having known our area of challenge to the realization of our dream of a corruption free Nigeria, the way forward can be said to include; a total overhauling of the judicial system, setting up of special court (i.e. Tribunals) to try corruption cases with a specified time limit (say 9 months (after investigation)
Furthermore, Capital punishment has to be meted out to individuals convicted of corruption to serve as deterrent to others and not the situation were corruption convicts are given an option of fine far less than the total sum that have been embezzled.
Apart from sending the corrupt big shots in the society to jail, concise effort also need to be put in place by the government to recover the loots over the years as well as confiscating the properties of corrupt individual(s) and converting it to National Asset for the general development of the Masses.
With President Buhari in power, am sure we are in safe hands as he is the only personality of our time who has a zero tolerance for corruption and with the help and support of all Nigerians, corruption will soon become a thing of the past in Nigeria as was made known by the President in his recent launch of the “Change Begins with me Campaign”.
For the benefit of doubt, it is still early to start judging whether we are winning the anti-corruption crusade or not as if everything being equal and every individual in the length and breadth of the country fine-tune their selves to this change Era, together corruption will the defeated and Nigeria will be great.
God bless the good people of Nigeria.
