Oil spills : Bayelsa seeks N1.6tn damages from oil companies

The Bayelsa State Government wants to put a stop to incessant pollution of its environment by multi-national companies operating in oil-bearing communities of the state.

To demonstrate its resolve to compel oil companies to apply international best practices, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner For Justice, Kema-suode Wodu, says the state government has filed an action claiming the sum of 1.6 trillion naira as damages inflicted by the companies.

Attorney General And Commissioner For Justice Kemasuode Wodu informed journalists of the move in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.

Wodu also inaugurated a committee to domesticate the Administration Of Criminal Justice Act in Bayelsa State with Barrister Andrew Arthur as Chairman.
