The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Maman Sidikou, says “the deteriorating security situation in the DRC remains a source of major concern.
Sidikou says armed group activity in Eastern DRC has increased, particularly with the resurfacing of former M23 elements.
With community-based violence and inter-ethnic clashes spreading from areas already affected by armed conflict.
And the political agreement of December the 31st provides a clear path towards the holding of elections, setting the stage for MONUSCO’s drawdown and exit.
According to Sidikou, despite the delays in the political process, significant progress has been achieved in updating the electoral register with the registration of more than 19 million electors .
