Leader of Zambia’s Economic and Equity Party Chilufya Tayali, is the latest opposition figure to be arrested for weighing in on the treason case against main opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema.
Tayali was arrested for a post on his Facebook page saying Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja is “covering his inefficiency” for arresting Hichilema.
According to him, the police chief should have cleared the route the president was travelling before it became a source of contention that led to Hichilema’s being held on charges of treason.
Hakainde Hichilema, leader of the main United Party for National Development , and five others were charged on for treason after refusing to give way to the president’s motorcade at Mongu near the capital Lusaka.
President Lungu told a gathering of party supporters in Kaputo on Friday that the country has rules and regulations and if found guilty, culprits should be convicted.
The treason charge carries a death sentence.
