Spain could have final say over future of Gibraltar during Brexit
The future of Gibraltar is at stake in the Brexit negotiations as the European Union appears to be backing Spain in its long dispute with the UK over the territory.
The British government has been given the choice of either reaching an agreement with Spain about Gibraltar’s future or pushing the rock out of any EU-UK trade deal altogether.
Gibraltar has been a British colony since 1830 but Spain has steadfastly sought sovereignty over it.
According to a senior EU official, now that Brexit is happening, the EU will ‘stick up for its members and that means Spain now.’
The announcement was made at the end of a draft document sent by European council president Donald Tusk to member states yesterday, outlining negotiating guidelines for the Brexit talks.
