Ethiopia’s Tedros Adhanom has been elected the new head of World Health Organisation, becoming the first African to lead the Geneva-based UN agency.
Adhanom who has vowed to make universal health care his priority, was chosen from amongst three nominees in a process that began before September 2016.
Tedros will begin his five-year term after Margaret Chan steps down on June the 30th.
Chan leaves a mixed legacy after serving two consecutive five-year terms.
