South African Opposition has asked the country’s top court, to rule on a secret vote in parliament, to determine President Jacob Zuma’s political future.
The United Democratic Movement which brought the case to court, maintains that since parliament votes by secret ballot to elect the president, it should also be able to use it to remove him.
The opposition filed the no-confidence motion in Zuma last month, after he fired
Pravin Gordhan as finance minister, but while there’s growing dissatisfaction with Zuma’s leadership in the ruling ANC, which holds 62 percent majority in parliament, the party’s leadership has rejected all opposition-led attempts to oust him.
The court hasn’t said when it expects to deliver its judgment, but Zuma, who has survived several previous opposition attempts to remove him, is due to step down as ANC leader in December.
