Super Eagles began their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on a losing note after the team lost 2-0 to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
Oghenekaro Etebo and Ogenyi Onazi came closest to scoring for Nigeria in a goalless first half.
But it was Bafana, who took the lead in the 55th minute through Rantie Tokelo’s beautiful header.
Nigeria went up in search of an equaliser and were badly exposed allowing substitute, Percy Tau to run unchallenged before rounding goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to slot into an empty net and seal maximum points.
It was Bafana’s first competitive win over the Super Eagles and Gernot Rohr’s first defeat as manager of the team.
