Government has been urged to pay more attention to the development of inland waterways transportation, if it hopes to sustain the life span of its road infrastructure.
A ferry operator, Modupe Lawale underscored this point in the light of the huge expenditure on road infrastructure repairs when the waterways should have been a more profitable alternative especially in a state like Lagos.
Lawale contends that inland waterways authorities should be committed to opening up new terminals and jetties that can be easily accessed by commuters.
She is convinced that jobs will be created and government’s revenue increased.
Lawale is also calling authorities attention on the need to mark the inland waterways with lights that will indicate the various routes to ferry operators.
She maintains that such action will provide security as well guarantee safety on the waters at night.
