The parliamentarians expressed concern that the Nigerian customs service has on four different occasions this year, intercepted firearms smuggled into Nigeria.

The proliferation of arms and Amunitions is becoming a worrying trend in the country.

Lawmakers are gravely concerned that the January 2017 firearms shipment, intercepted by the Nigerian customs after it was purportedly checked and certified to leave the port, was tracked down after a tip-off.

The mover of the motion, Honourable Obina Chidoka, stressed the need for the service to effectively brace up and verify Cargos properly before been certified.

Other lawmakers lent their voice to the motion, and urged the Nigerian customs service, the directorate of state security as well as the office of the attorney general of the federation, to speed up investigations on the seizure and commence prosecution to serve as deterrents to others.

This year alone, a total of 2,671 pieces of fire arms have been seized with the first seizure made in January, the second in May, while the third and Fourth were made in September.

The house resolved to invite the Nigerian customs boss and the director of state security to give brief on the comprehensive plan to check this
