The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Willie Obiano, winner of the 2017 governorship election in Anambra state.
Obiano, who is also the incumbent governor of the state, defeated his closest rival, Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress and 35 other candidates in a keenly contested election to secure a second term in office.
The APGA candidate defeated all his opponent in all the 21 local government areas of the state with a very wide margin. He polled 234, 071 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Tony Nwoye who scored a total of 98, 782 votes. The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Obaze Oseloka came third with total of 70, 293 votes.
Announcing the result, INEC Returning officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor, Zana Itiunbe Akpagu, said the candidate of the APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.
Meanwhile, candidate of the United Progressive Party, UPP, Osita Chidoka has conceded defeat in Saturday’s Anambra governorship election.
