U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the death penalty for the suspect in Tuesday’s attack in New York City, describing the man as a “terrorist.”
29-year-old Uzbek immigrant, Sayfullo Saipov is suspected of killing eight people after plowing a truck into cyclists and pedestrians on a bike path.
Saipov who was hospitalized after a police officer shot and arrested him, has been charged in a federal court, with acting on behalf of militant group, Islamic State.
He told investigators he had been inspired by watching Islamic State videos and began planning the attack a year ago.
Saipov did not ask for bail and was remanded to federal custody.
