Vote counting underway in Liberia run-off election

Polls have closed and counting has started in Liberia’s historic presidential run-off election.

The run-off was a different picture from the first round in October, which had a 75 percent turnout.

More than two million were registered to vote at more than 5,400 polling stations. But as the polling coincided with Christmas, many chose to stay home.

Former soccer star George Weah is competing against the country’s Vice President, Joseph Boakai.

George Weah won the first round, but not with enough votes for an outright victory.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission has said the run-off held without any major incidents and results should be out this week.

NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya said polling stations opened on time, except in three places, where the voting time had been extended.

He also said a few incidents, including a voter, who may have tried to vote twice, had been dealt with on the spot and are under investigation.
