At least eight migrants drowned, but 84 others were rescued after a rubber dinghy sank off the Libyan coast.
Dozens might still be missing as an humanitarian agency says many of those rescued had spent hours in the water.
This is believed to be the first sinking of a migrant boat in the Mediterranean in 2018.
According to the International Organization for Migration, nearly 34,000 migrants have drowned or gone missing in the waters since 2000.
