The president of Kwara United Ladi Thompson said on Thursday Stephen Alfred (player) and the Welfare Officer of the club Lukman Ijaya who were hospitalised after the Ilorin Premier League team’s auto crash in Moniya, Ibadan, on Wednesday had been discharged from hospital.
No fewer than 30 officials and players of the club escaped death by a whisker following the accident involving their coaster bus and a stationary truck on the Oyo-Ibadan Expressway. The team were returning home from Lagos where they featured in the Nigeria National League Super 4 when the accident occurred.
While others escaped unhurt, Alfred, Ijaya and the team’s cameraman sustained varying degrees of injury in the accident and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Thompson told our correspondent that the cameraman had yet to be discharged from Maxi Hospital in Adewole Housing Estate, Ilorin, where he alongside Alfred and Ijaya were rushed to after the crash.
The club chief said the cameraman sustained a cut on his head.
He stated that the Kwara State Government had been assisting those injured in the accident.
Thomspon said, “They are all fine now. They have been discharged except one person – the cameraman. He has a cut on the head. That is the only one remaining at the hospital. “The accident will not affect their chances of playing in the forthcoming games.
“The government has been making a lot of efforts. They have been giving assistance and support.
“The fans visited them at the hospital, they are aware of the development. All the stakeholders are aware of what is going on.
“The fans came for the unveiling ceremony (of 17 new players) today. We were all together. We are on the same page. They have no cause to worry about the performance of the team.”
Commissioner for Information Babatunde Ajeigbe said, “Government will do everything possible for everybody to be okay and in taking care of them. Whatever that is necessary to be done will be done by government.”
