The federal government has authorized the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to take over operatorship of Oil Mining Lease 11 from Shell Petroleum Development Company in Ogoni land.
This was disclosed in a memorandum titled “Operatorship of Entire Oil Mining Lease 11” signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.
The government wants the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company to take over the operatorship of the entire asset by May the 2nd 2019.
Shell has 45 per cent stake in OML 11 while the Federal Government has 55 per cent but Shell has been the operator of OML 11 but has not been operating the oil fields due to its role in Ogoni land crisis.
