Benjamin Netanyahu’s hopes of securing a record fifth term as Israeli Prime Minister are on hold for the moment, after early results showed a tight election race with his main rival.
A combination of Netanyahu´s Likud and smaller right-wing parties allied to him had between 60 and 66 seats in the 120-seat parliament
Netanyahu´s main challenger, Benny Gantz and his Blue and White alliance, along with other smaller parties had between 54 and 60 seats, according to the exit polls.
Both sides are projected to win 35 seats each based on actual results according to local media.

If Mr Netanyahu secures a record fifth term, he would become Israel’s longest-serving prime minister overtaking Israel’s founding father David Ben-Gurion.
