The Delta State Government has become the first to adopt the state of Emergency in water and sanitation sector as approved by the National Economic Council. It was inaugurated by President Muhammad Buhari last November.
The Governor pledged his support for the programme while inaugurating the state steering committee to coordinate the advocacy in Government House Asaba.
Statistics from the UNICEF-WHO joint Monitoring Programme show that access to piped water in households in urban areas declined from 32% in 1990 to less than 10% in 2015. Access to improved sanitation dropped from 38% to 29%.
Armed by these data, the Federal Government declared state of emergency in Water and sanitation sector. The Delta state government is towing that same path.
