A Senator representing Yobe north in the 9th National Assembly, Ahmed Lawan, has been elected the President of the Senate for a four-year term.
Lawan polled a total of 79 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ali Ndume, who polled 28 votes.
He is succeeding Bukola Saraki, who presided over the 8th Senate between 2015 and 2019.
Both Lawan and Ali Ndume were elected on the platforms of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
