President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the bill declaring June 12 Public Holiday. The law makes May 29 handover date and not a Public holiday.
The Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, briefed State House correspondents after the signing.
The new law, according to him, now allows public holiday to be declared on June 12 every year, while May 29th will no longer be public holiday.
May 29th will only be handing over date and working day.
Until now, June 12 was only being celebrated and declared public holiday by the Southwest states.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2018 declared June 12 Democracy Day, and honoured the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential election, MKO Abiola and his running mate, Babangana Kingibe with awards of GCFR and GCON respectively.
