About eight hundred beneficiaries are taking part in a free health outreach, organised by the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in Kiagbodo, Delta state.
The three-day programme drew participants from 19 villages with sensitisation and treatment of malaria, HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis as well as eye diseases.
Some cases were as telling as they came.
A beneficiary identified as Angelina Amaku’s said she’s had a 46-year-long battle with goiter, a disease she contracted when she was thirteen, now 59, she sees an end to her suffering in sight.
Another beneficiary, kekebere Dode, now in her eighties said she gave up fishing long ago as she also had a similar but more severe condition.
While others managed to queue and follow the ritual of the day’s protocol, she could only do the much her children assisted her to achieve.
As she was taken from the crowd to see the medical personnel and then later into the theatre, TVC News monitored her progress over several hours patiently;soon the doctors were done with her cataract surgery.
It is a condition she has had for ten years though it is curable in 15 minutes.
Leader of the medical team, Dr Kamal Umar provided some insight into the project itself.
The ministry says the outreach is one of the ways it seeks to keep with its mandate.
He said the intervention couldn’t have come at a better time.
It’s the first time the federal ministry of Niger Delta Affairs is making a stratetigic intervention of this kind in Delta state after stops in Cross River, Ondo, Edo and Akwa Ibom states.
