As commemorations for the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre gets underway, Security around the area has been beefed up.
June the 4th every year is the anniversary of the day when Chinese troops opened fire to end student-led protests.
On the square in Beijing, it was business as usual and hundreds queued up in the early morning to see the raising of the Chinese national flag amid tight security. Large numbers of police and paramilitary vehicles could be seen around the square.
Chinese authorities ban any public commemoration of the event on the mainland and have never released a full death toll.
Estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand.
