27 brilliant Nigerian students get American Scholarships

Twenty-seven high achieving students have been granted full study scholarship in various universities in the United States of America. The students were given pre-orientation at the US embassy in Abuja to make their stay and integration seamless.

The dwindling standards of education in Nigeria, has made study beyond the shores of the country an attractive prospect for as many that can afford the cost. The high costs of achieving this has made it the sole preserve the reserve of the rich and just a dream for the less privileged.

The United States Embassy through its Education USA has created an opportunity fund programme for very brilliant students who fall into the category of the less privileged

The programme which started in 2004 has given thousands of opportunities to Nigerian students who could not afford it. One of such students is Abraham Ojima that i met at the embassy. He told TVC News his very compelling story of hope and perseverance.

Abraham got a $76,000 scholarship from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania to study computer Science and Neuro Science, but the journey before the scholarship wasn’t an easy one

He completed his secondary education in 2016 and could not go further due to paucity of funds as the daily income his mother who sells Kunu along the Karu Suburb of Abuja, is less than 2000 naira, and she has 4 children to feed

The United States Institutions are giving Scholarships worth $7.2M, that is N2.58Billion to deserving Nigerian Students in the 2018/2019 session

The Acting Deputy of Mission says beyond the cultural exchanges, the students to bring back the experiences for an enduring change in Nigeria

In every three African studying in the US is a Nigerian and there are 13,000 Nigerians out of the 39,000 Africans currently studying in the United States making Nigeria the highest beneficiary in Africa and 13th in the world.
