Agric extension workers and programme managers from 18 states are currently meeting at the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanical, Idofian, Kwara state to develop strategies to improve agric mechanisation extension.
The aim is to improve productivity and make farming less tedious for farmers.
Agriculture contributes only 22 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product due to poor mechanisation extension.
The meeting was organised to chart a direction for indigenous technology dissemination and adoption with participants drawn from 18 states of the federation.
Participants were emphatic on the need for increased funding to fully develop local technology for food security.
The National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation was established to develop indigenous technologies for the mechanisation of Nigerian agriculture but this mandate has not been fully achieved due to inadequate funding and the penchant to go for foreign tools.
