Farmers in Benue State have been called upon to invest in the entire agriculture value chain as it is a profitable alternative for unemployment.
The major income generator for Benue state is agriculture hence the motto ‘the food basket of the nation’.
The state is reputed for its cultivation of yam, cassava maize, rice, and a host of other crops. Fishing is also another source of livelihood for people in Benue state.
Despite the fact that Benue state is an agricultural hub, it is yet to explore its full potential in agribusiness
Agribusiness encompasses all the steps required to get an agricultural good to the market through production, processing and distribution.
Most Farmers in the State Farm do not go through all these steps
The meeting between the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and the Chief of Party Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture, Adam Shaffer, was to discuss how to get farmers fully involved in agribusiness and to attract investment.
They both agree that there’s need to encourage more women and youth to participate in the value chain.
The renewed focus on agribusiness in the state, is expected that to reduce the level of poverty in the state, as more avenues to get citizens actively employed are explored.
