The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been advised not to register new universities without focus on science, engineering programmes.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mohammed Sani Harun said it is regrettable that many graduates are unemployable because they have no skills.
A collaboration between universities, research institutions and industry to kick start genuine industrial development of the country has long been advocated.
This received a boost as the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and the Management of Nasarawa state university signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to work together.
The National agency for science and Engineering Infrastructure says polytechnics should also be compelled to make their admission policy 70 to 30 per cent in favour of science and technology courses.
While hosting the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, the Chief executive officer of NASENI, said it had already secured assistance from a firm in Italy to help the university to kick start its engineering courses.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Suleiman Mohammed, said the institution is specifically planning to commence program in Engineering and Medical Science.
He identified that the programme will improve the economic, scientific and engineering growth of Nigeria.
The Agency has Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and engineering equipment useful to curb insecurity problems and solve economic problems in key sectors of the nation’s economy such as power, education, agriculture, health, industries.
