The Adamawa state police command and residents have different views on the identity of the gunmen, who invaded two communities in Numan local government area Sunday morning.
Police identified the attackers as cattle rustlers, but residents insist they were herdsmen.
One survivor of the latest assault, an 11-year-old orphan, is receiving treatment at Numan general hospital.
Other survivors, including a nursing mother, shared their experiences with TVC News Correspondent.
The Nursing mother said ‘at about 12 midnight, we heard sounds of gunshots, so we ran out into the bush to take cover. we sat under a tree, but they were trailing us, when they fired gunshots sporadically i was hit on my leg’
Another survivor paul Nathaniel said ‘the attackers layed ambush around every house waiting for people to come out. They divided themselves into two groups, one group went to kodumti, where they shot four women, the other group stayed with us in Shaforon.
They shot one person in our village before we were rescued by security agents’
Chairman of Numan local government area and chief medical director at the hospital said the patients are responding to treatment.
Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, said one of the attackers who he identified as a bandit, was killed in the crossfire.
He also disclosed that additional operatives have been dispatched to search surrounding areas and arrest the fleeing cattle rustlers.
Farming communities of Shaforon and Kudumti have experienced more than six attacks by herders within a year.
This has lead to the death of more than fifty persons and destruction of property worth millions of naira.
