A group of youths in Akure, Ondo State capital, has staged a walk to mark the 2019 World Suicide Prevention Day, with a call to relevant government
agencies to organise more of such awareness programmes.
Ayodeji Moradeyo reports that the World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10th of September every year.
The day is marked worldwide to provide commitment and action aimed at preventing suicides.
Towards checking the rising number of suicide cases in Nigeria, some youths decided to march round major streets of Akure, Ondo State capital to mark the day.
Walking round the city from the Adegbemile cultural centre, the youths stressed the need to guide against suicide. They were joined by psychiatrists, nurses, christian bodies, civil servants among others.
Participants in this walk say suicide should never be an option to people facing depression and other challenges in life.
Organiser of the event, Gbenga Adene, said the walk is designed to create a forum to put an end to rising cases of suicide in Nigeria.
