Boeing CEO, Dennis Muilenburg has acknowledged mistakes as he testified before U.S. Congress for the first time since two deadly air crashes of its 737 Max planes killed 346 people, but he evaded tough questions such as why the company withheld details about its flawed new automated system.
An Ethiopian Airlines plane en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya, crashed in March, 2019, killing all 157 people aboard.
A Lion Air plane also crashed in October last year in Indonesia, killing all 189 people on board. Both were Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft and circumstances surrounding both crashes shared alarming similarities.
Muilenburg provided few details when pressed by U.S. lawmakers on why Boeing allowed jet airliners, with a risky flight control system already known to the company before the crashes, to keep flying, and Senator Tammy Duckworth described his speech as “half-truths.”
