Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court In Abuja has granted bail to the convener of the Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore, as well as his co defendant Olawale Bakare.
Mr Sowore is being held on seven counts charge of treasonable felony, cybercrimes and money laundering.
The Judge said the charges against the accused do not carry the death penalty.
The accused had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana asked the judge to release the defendants on self recognition.
He recalled the protest of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2003 after he lost the presidential election and the court ruled in his favour upholding his right to protest.
There was a mild fracas in the courtroom between officers of the DSS and the defense lawyers few minutes after the court went on recess.
The security operatives attempted to cease the phones of people taking pictures of the defendant but met stiff resistant from lawyers who claimed it is an infringement on human rights.
