Nigeria’s Federal Housing Authority has called for a review of the 1973 Act governing its operations in order to reposition it for improved efficiency. At an interactive meeting with the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, the lawmakers charged the agency to develop a framework that will also
accommodate Nigerians in diaspora.
National Assembly Correspondent, Joke Adisa reports that tackling the housing deficit in Nigeria has been a huge challenge. The estimated deficit of 17 million housing units, is made worse by the challenges of natural disasters and terrorism who h have cropped up in recent times
Among the obstacles are obsolete laws and low patronage. The agency is now developing what it calls Organic Housing for displaced persons
Lawmakers tasked the agency to use housing as a tool for economic development with the inclusion of Nigerians in diaspora.
The Housing and Construction sector in Nigeria accounts for only about 3 per cent of the nation’s rebased Gross Domestic Product.
The legislators said they look forward to Nigeria attaining between the 30 and 70 per cent status of countries like USA, Britain and Canada in the
nearest future.
