The Federal Government says plans are in place to regulate the use of social media, to curtail the spread of fake news and hate speech.
According to the minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, the Federal Government will implement reforms in the media industry and sanction any defaulter.
Lai Mohammed added that the reform will be extended to the social media space which he described as ‘totally out of control’.
Mr Mohammed said no responsible government would sit back and allow activities such as fake news and hate speech to continue unchecked.
Some Nigerians are already criticising government, accusing it of planning to use hate speech and fake news as a means to clamp down on critical views.
