Just days after double fire incidents occurred in Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre of South East, Nigeria, the popular Santana market in Benin, Edo state, has been razed by fire.
Traders say goods worth billions of Naira were destroyed in the incident on Saturday night.
They say they were helpless as they watched how their money went up in flames due to the intensity of the blaze, after several calls put across to the state fire services proved abortive.
It took the fire service of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company to put out the fire.
Eyewitnesses say the incident may have been caused by power surge from one of the shops in the market.
