It’s the International Day of the Girl Child today.
The International Day Of The Girl Child is celebrated every year on the 11th of October. It is one of the days set aside to promote empowerment of the female child and fulfillment of their human rights while also highlighting the challenges that girls worldwide face.
About 25 years ago, some 30,000 people from nearly 200 countries converged on Beijing, China for the Fourth World Conference on Women, determined to recognize the rights of women and girls as human rights.
In Nigeria, the girl child is faced with a lot of challenges.
From being denied access to quality education, to undergoing genital mutilation, and early marriages, there is still much to be done to liberate the girl child.
The theme for this year is – GirlfForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also adds that-“We need to uphold the equal rights, voices and influence of girls in our families, communities and nations. Girls can be powerful agents of change, and nothing should keep them from participating fully in all areas of life.”
