A civil society group has faulted the increase in Value Added Tax, saying without an effort to create wealth, the idea of taxation is a recipe for economic disaster.
It insist with the 30,000 naira minimum wage still unresolved, discussions should first focus on how to generate wealth through employment creation.
Correspondent, Habidah Lawal reports that the Senate last week passed the Finance Bill, 2019, despite the public outcry that greeted some aspects of the proposed law particularly the increase in the Value Added Tax. From 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent.
The Resource Centre For Human Rights and Civic Education challenged the bill, which it believed that policy makers are looking for the easiest way out of revenue constraints the nation s faced with, without considering the welfare of citizens
They described the hate speech bill as an assault on the constitutionality guaranteed rights of citizens to free speech.
The groups insisted that civil society organisations must continue to hold public officials accountable and not allow themselves to be drowned in the sea of political intrigues.
