Rice farmers and other trade bodies in Adamawa and Taraba states have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for taking the tough decision to close the nation’s borders in order to tackle economic sabotage.
They made this known to Tvcnews shortly after a closed-door meeting with the comptroller of customs in charge of both states.
Correspondent Owolabi Adenusi reports that Nigeria’s border communities in Adamawa and Taraba states had been a haven for smugglers and persons engaging in businesses that undermine Nigeria’s economic growth.
The routes which were often used to smuggle Petroleum products, foreign rice and other contraband goods in and out of the nation are now no- go areas to these illicit businesses.
It has had a telling effect on the fortunes of rice farmers, millers, transporters and other key players in the agriculture industry in Taraba and Adamawa states
It is no surprise that they are appreciative of the anti-smuggling war declared by the federal government.
This meeting between representatives of rice farmers and rice millers and the Comptroller of the Nigeria Custom Service in charge of Adamawa and Taraba state Command, is to express their solidarity
The millers association thanked the federal government for banning rice importation saying that, it has boosted their businesses and increased local patronage.
Residents of the state shared their view on reduction in the smuggling of Petroleum products to neighbouring countries such as Cameroon.
There is optimism in Adamawa state that the federal government’s policy will ensure food sufficiency by boosting local production.
