The Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria has condemned alleged plans by the Federal Capital Territory Administration to ban tricycles from operating in parts of the city.
According to the association, the ban will render more of the city’s youths jobless.
Helen Osamede-Akins reports that Tricycle Operators are an important part of Abuja’s transportation system. They were introduced in 2002 by the authorities to ease commuter movement.
The auto rickshaws popularly called Keke Napep are a cheap and safer alternative to motorcycles, which have been banned for years within the city centre.
Section 42 subsection 1 of the FCT’s traffic act does not allow for motorcycle transport services in all of the capital city. But the authorities only prevent them from operating within the city center and allow their operations in suburbs and satellite towns.
