Thousands of people are trapped on a beach in southeast Australia after fleeing their homes as strong winds brought wildfires and smoke so thick that the morning sky turned dark.
On Tuesday, about 4,000 residents and visitors were forced to leave their homes in Mallcoota, in the state of Victoria.
More than 900 homes have been destroyed in New South Wales alone, and that number is likely to increase as firefighters struggle to contain the massive fires.
The death toll has also been rising; a 28-year-old volunteer firefighter died on Monday after strong winds rolled his truck over.
