U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pledged that the United States would urgently tackle global warming despite the president’s opposition to an international pact.
The House Speaker made this known during an appearance at the two-week long United Nations climate summit in Madrid, Spain.
“By coming here, we want to say to everyone we are still in, the United States is still in,” Ms Pelosi said on Monday.
Mr Trump announced his decision to withdraw the United States, a top polluter in the world, from the Paris Climate Accord early in his presidency, but was unable to officially tell member nations of the agreement which now includes every country except the US until last month.
Trump says complying with the accord would hurt the U.S. economy, restricting domestic producers while other big polluters such as China increase emissions.
