Ahead of the 2019 International Anti-corruption day, the federal government of Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has launched the 2nd report on Nigeria’s implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in Abuja.
The effort is to enable the country achieve goal 16 of the sustainable development goal.
Moyo Thomas reports that one of the recommendations from the review report states that Nigeria ensured the clarification and synergy in functions among anti corruption bodies to ensure effectiveness and avoid duplicity
According to statistics from the United Nations, an estimated one trillion dollars is paid in bribes annually, similarly, about 2.6 trillion dollars are stolen annually through corruption
These figures are equivalent to more than five percent of the global gross domestic product.
If corruption could be curbed, developing nations like Nigeria would be in no need of development assistance as about 10 times that amount given is lost to corruption.
