Mikel Arteta earned his first win as Arsenal’s Manager after seeing the Gunners produced a powerful first-half performance to beat a lacklustre Manchester United.
Nicolas Pepe opened scoring in the 8th minute after steering home a cross to set the Gunners in confident mood.
The hosts took control from there and doubled their lead when a corner was smashed in from close range.
Victory for Arsenal ended a run of seven home games without a win in all competitions and lifted them to 10th place, four points behind United.
The defeat leaves United fifth on the table, five points behind Chelsea.
In other Premier League games played on New year’s day, a late equalising goal from Brighton’s Alireza Jahan-bakshee denied Chelsea all three points at the Amex stadium.
Chelsea took an early lead in the 10th minute through Captain Cesar Azpilicueta but were denied maximum points after AliReza scored a beautiful over head kick to salvage a point for the host.
Totthenham lost to 11th placed Southampton, courtesy of an early goal scored by Danny Ings.
Aston Villa got a 2-1 win away at Burnley, Watford defeated wolves 2 goals to 1, while second placed Leicester got an impressive 3 nil win away at St James’s park over Newcastle United.
League Leaders Liverpool are scheduled to play Sheffield United on Thursday at Anfield.
