A group has called out the Northeast Development Commission for failing to live up to its mandate, almost 8 months after it was inaugurated. The Northeast Development Association said the commission has little to nothing.
Defence Correspondent Sifon Essien reports that the Northeast Development Commission is saddled with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds for the settlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of
insurgency
The Northeast Development Commission is also meant to mitigate the menace of poverty, illiteracy, ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the North-East states.
It was inaugurated on the 8th of May 2019 with a take off grant of 10 Billion Naira.
Among the projects undertaken by the commission is the rehabilitation and upgrading of water supply facilities in eight towns affected by insurgency
in Adamawa, implemented under the Federal Government and World Bank-funded Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project. But a group said the activities undertaken by the Commission is of little or no effect.
Their concern is that since the Commission came on stream, it should have done a lot more due to the funds at its disposal and the need for rapid development of the northeast.
