Nigerian Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reconstitute the Federal Character Commission as failure to do so will amount to a breach of the 1999 Constitution and the act of the Commission.
The resolution followed a motion by Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, stating that the tenure of the board of the Commission had elapsed since 2018 and therefore is being run illegally.
Senator Abaribe explained that there is no provision in the Federal Character Commission Act which stipulates the need for a Sole Administrator or Acting Chairman to run the affairs of the Commission.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said resconstituting the Board of Federal character Commission will ensure equity and equality in appointments and recruitments in government agencies.
