The Federal Government has approved a bill to create a single agency to manage the proceeds of crime in the country.
The decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, explained that the agency is necessary to mange assets that constitute proceeds of crimes as he pointed out that previous proceeds of crime are scattered in different and multiple agencies.
Also approved at the virtual meeting was a new national policy on occupational safety and health.
The new national policy on occupational Safety and Health is aimed at ensuring all workers are safe at their work places across the country.
It is taken from provisions of the Nigerian constitution and the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) convention.
The policy was last reviewed fourteen years ago but this new policy approved by Council has a review period of three years.
Also approved by Council was the Proceeds of Crime Recovery and Management Agency Bill.
The bill is targeted at putting in place a legal and institutional framework that will ensure an agency is saddled with managing the assets that constitute the proceeds of crime in Nigeria.
The Attorney General of the Federation believes the law when passed will move the fight against corruption to the next level as it will ensure that all proceeds of crime and corruption are accounted for at any given time.
