A State High Court in Benin, Edo State has sentenced Joseph Omotosho, a former officer of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, to seven year imprisonment for conspiracy, and death by hanging or chemical infusion for murder.
The judge however, suspended the sentencing of the other absconded Police officers until when the convicts were presented in court. The absconded officers are also members of the defunct SARS.
The Judge premised his decision on section 352(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice law of Edo State.
The five defendants were tried on an eight-count charge of conspiracy, murder and stealing.
The absconders had on 19th October 2020, escaped during the “Prison break” that was part of the EndSARS protests when two correctional Centres in Benin and Oko were destroyed.
