The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will appear before the Senate on Wednesday for screening that will determine the confirmation of his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, disclosed this during his opening remarks at the plenary on Tuesday.
Senator Lawan says Justice Ariwoola would appear before the Committee of the Whole to answer questions from Lawmakers and also tell them how he hopes to steer the affairs of the Judicial arm of government if his appointment is confirmed.
The Acting CJN was appointed on June 27, 2022, by President Buhari and would need the senates’ confirmation within three months after his appointment, failure of which will require a fresh nomination.
Justice Olukayode Ariwoola was named Acting CJN of Nigeria following the resignation on health grounds of the former substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammed.
He was the most senior Justice on the bench of the Supreme Court following the resignation of the former CJN.
He is a native of Iseyin in Oyo State.
